Why does my custom link preview (thumbnail, title) look different on social media

Social media and messaging apps display the title and description of shared links alongside the link itself. This article is for users who have "already" used the custom preview feature.

If you have not set a custom preview on PicSee, the preview depends on the actual content of the destination website and has nothing to do with PicSee settings. For related issues, see: Why can't I see my webpage thumbnail on PicSee?

How to check the preview a social platform has fetched

Most social media and messaging apps follow roughly the same fetching rules as Facebook, so you can check with Facebook's official debugging tool:
  1. Go to Facebook Debug and log in with your Facebook account.
  2. Paste the short link into the URL field and click "Debug". You will see the thumbnail, title, and description Facebook has fetched.
  3. You can see when it was last fetched, and click "Scrape Again" to make Facebook fetch it again.
Note: Meta has recently shifted its focus to AI, which consumes a lot of crawler resources, so thumbnails may temporarily fail to be fetched. If the short link returns a fetch error, try the "destination URL" instead to see whether it is an isolated case.

Troubleshooting by platform

First make sure the Facebook Debug tool above already fetches the correct preview.
  1. Facebook: As a Page admin on desktop, click the "..." at the top right of the post and choose "Refresh share attachment". Facebook will then fetch the link again.
  2. LINE: LINE has been changing its caching mechanism lately. Once a URL has been fetched on the current device, it will not be fetched again, so you will always see the first version of the thumbnail and title. The only way to check is to send the short link via LINE to a friend who has never seen it, and ask them for a screenshot.
